Caring For A Child With Perinatal Asphyxia

If your child was born with perinatal asphyxia, he or she is likely to have permanent damage to the brain or other organs. To help you meet the needs of your newborn, you will need support from your family, your faith and your friends. You may also benefit from the advice of a birth injury lawyer.

At Sokol & Associates, P.C., in Portland, our attorneys work with families in Oregon whose children have been born with severe injuries such as brain damage and cerebral palsy. If your child’s injury was caused by negligence on the part of the hospital or doctor, we will work to recover the compensation you will need to meet the challenges your child will face. Causes For Perinatal Asphyxia

Perinatal or birth asphyxia is a condition caused by oxygen deprivation to the fetus during labor and delivery. Some of the causes may include:

  • The umbilical cord wrapped around the child’s neck
  • Premature separation of the placenta from the uterus
  • Low blood pressure of the mother

In many cases, perinatal asphyxia can be prevented by monitoring the vital signs of fetus and mother during labor and delivery, and performing an emergency C-section when necessary. Unfortunately, if nurses and doctors fail to properly monitor the fetus and respond appropriately when the fetus is in distress, oxygen deprivation may be the result.

Our doctors will examine hospital records and work with medical experts to determine if your doctor or hospital was negligent. If so, we will seek compensation to help you provide the care your child needs to live as full a life as possible.
