What Is A Brachial Plexus Injury?

Also called “Erb’s Palsy,” a brachial plexus birth injury occurs when the brachial plexus nerves between a baby’s spinal cord and shoulder/arm are stretched or torn. It is the direct result of shoulder dystocia and any other trauma to the brachial plexus nerves.

Most brachial plexus injuries are the result of stretched nerves and go away in a matter of months. Others, however, such as brachial plexus rupture, avulsion and neuroma, can require surgical repair or lead to lifelong nerve damage.

The extent of your child’s Erb’s Palsy will help determine how much compensation he or she should fairly receive in a birth injury lawsuit. This is because a birth injury recovery covers not only past and current medical bills, but also future expenses such as rehabilitation costs, and the pain and suffering the injury has caused and will cause in the future.
