Couple awarded $14.5 million in obstetrical malpractice suit

The birth of a child is one of the most amazing experiences in the lives of parents. Its unfortunate when this experience is turned into a tragedy by negligent care during delivery. Despite years of training and experience, obstetricians in Oregon and across the United States still make mistakes. When mistakes are made in the delivery room, both the newborn and the mother may suffer. Recently, a couple in another state received a substantial monetary judgment with regard to their obstetrical malpractice lawsuit.

According to the claim, the obstetrician was negligent in caring for the mother while she was in labor. The plaintiffs alleged that the doctor ordered the drug Picotin while the mother was in labor. The drug is said to have caused contractions, thereby limiting the supply of oxygen to the child during delivery. Because of this, according to the lawsuit, the baby was born suffering from cerebral palsy as well as other disabilities.

The claim asserted that the mother was being monitored and there were signs that the baby was in distress. Despite this, no action was taken to help with the problem. The jury returned a verdict in favor of the plaintiffs. They were awarded $14.5 million.

Each day, obstetricians across the United States are entrusted with the care of mothers and newborns. However, mistakes in the delivery room can have far-reaching impacts. Fortunately, all patients are protected by law. Oregon residents that feel they have been a victim of obstetrical malpractice have the right to take legal action. A successful lawsuit could result in damages that can help offset medical bills and other financial losses.
