Post-surgical errors in treatment can be catastrophic

Oregon residents who are about to undergo a surgical procedure are often concerned with the risks involved in the surgery itself. What many may not realize is that the treatment they receive before and after the procedure is just as important. Post-surgical errors can have devastating consequences.

In the absence of the proper precautions and monitoring during surgery and after, blood can pool in a patient's thigh and can clot in the deep veins. If a patient is not properly monitored after surgery, a clot can break up and move throughout the body and into the lungs. A clot in the lungs is called a pulmonary embolism.

This is just one reason that taking a detailed medical history is essential prior to surgery. If an Oregon resident is at risk for blood clots, extra precautions will need to be taken. Even if there is no known risk, patients need to be appropriately monitored. Movement is one of the best ways to counteract the potential for clotting.

Serious injuries and even death can occur from a pulmonary embolism. A patient who survives such a condition may not know right away what the lasting effects will be. In addition to the costs of recovery, there could be ongoing medical treatment needed and, thus, more medical expenses -- possibly for the rest of the patient's life. The loss of a loved one from a pulmonary embolism is tragic under any circumstances and has its own set of financial repercussions.

In either case, you may be entitled to file a medical malpractice claim. If the court determines that post-surgical errors occurred, it may then consider an award of the damages you requested. Any monetary restitution received can help defray the costs you and your family incurred -- and may incur in the future.
