Post-surgical care crucial to preventing complications

People are often elated when a loved one has made it safely through surgery, thinking that their family member is no longer in peril. But what many don’t realize is that surgery isn’t just a risk while the actual procedure is taking place.

Because of the trauma that the body undergoes during a surgical procedure, it remains in a highly vulnerable state from the minute the patient is wheeled into the recovery room until the day the healing process is finally complete.

All too often, doctors and other health care providers think that their jobs are done when a patient leaves the operating room. But the post-operative care can be just as crucial as the operation itself, and patients can be severely harmed if the proper treatment is not administered.

One of the most common ways patients suffer because of negligent post-surgery care is by developing infections at the incision site. Infections following surgery can not only greatly increase a patient’s recovery time, they can also be deadly.

Another common post-surgical complication is called a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can result when a blood clot forms in one part of the body and then breaks apart and travels through the blood stream before lodging in the lungs, potentially causing serious lung damage or death.

As we discussed at length in a past post, pulmonary embolisms can result if patients are not cared for properly following a surgical procedure. This is especially the case for patients who are bed-ridden for a long period of time after surgery.

If you or someone you love has suffered from a post-surgical complication and believe that it was the result of a lapse in care, you may be entitled to economic and noneconomic damages for your suffering.

An experienced medical malpractice lawyer can go over the facts of your case to determine if you may have a medical malpractice claim.
